Steam Whistle Brewery Wedding | Courtney & Dan

November 24, 2017

Steam Whistle Brewery Wedding Toronto | Olive Photography Steam Whistle Brewery Wedding Toronto | Olive PhotographyFunny how life works out – Courtney’s parents moved from the US down the street from the spot their daughter would meet her future husband.

On Summer break from school 5 years ago she met Dan at a BBQ near her parents’ new home. She couldn’t shake him off, and found herself packing her things after graduation and moving from Nevada to be with him.

They got married at SteamWhistle Pilsner Brewery, and all her bridesmaids & many family members came from the US to celebrate their special day.

Here’s a peek at their Steam Whistle Brewery Wedding!

What a beautiful and fun day!!
—

Here are some reflections from Courtney & Dan themselves, written just before their big day:

  • What is your wedding theme / style / colour palette? Why did you choose this? The colors are navy blue, dusty blue and lavendar. We don’t really have a theme or style, it’s all very random and just what we throughout would look good in the venue space.
  • What 3 words best describe your wedding? Fun, Easy and Love
  • What have you been looking forward to most about your wedding day? The ceremony and the vows, the first look, the specialty cocktail and the poutine food truck at midnight!
  • Venue: What made this venue the one for you? BEER! We love beer. Also the brick, and the wood beams, the entire décor and structure of the building is beautiful. Also it’s right downtown, which is such a fun place to be celebrating.
  • Photographer: How did you know you had found the right photographer? She made us feel comfortable when we were having our photos taken. Neither of us particularly enjoys photos or being the center of attention, but Anastasia made us feel like we were just hanging out and she happened to have a camera/ plus after people saw out engagement photos they raved about how the pictures looked so much like who we are as people. That our personalities were obvious in the pictures. We can’t wait to see how our wedding photos turn out!
  • Any words of advice for couples planning their wedding? Don’t do it! Kidding. Just try to keep some perspective while planning is going on. It’s not about a single day or which shoes you decide to wear, the whole point it to marry your person. In 10 years, I hope we look back on pictures of our day and remember how much we love each other at this time in our lives, and how much love we have for our friends and family.

Leslieville & Balmy Beach Engagement | Mistyna & Joe

November 23, 2017

Balmy Beach Engagement Photos Toronto | Olive Photography Balmy Beach Engagement Photos Toronto | Olive PhotographyLeslieville & Balmy Beach Engagement

“We are two outgoing individuals who enjoy being social but also love our downtime.  We love finding hidden gems of coffee shops, going out for delicious meals, enjoying wine, hanging out with family and friends and taking our dog for walks.”

This is an excerpt from Mistyna’s initial email to me. They sounded super lovely and I immediately dug their vibe.

For their Toronto engagement session we touched on all these things with the exception of the dog.
We ate lunch at a way cute Leslieville restaurant called The Green Wood (so delicious – check out the food we got!), shared some wine (helpful to warm us up on the brisk day), and went for a walk at nearby Balmy Beach.

Being late fall, the lighting and temperature were on the darker, cooler side, so I shot and edited their session in a way that embraced that. There’s a slightly more ‘moody’ quality than my more common Summer shoots, but I have to say I really love the cozy, intimate feeling of this approach.

Despite frozen fingers, I’d definitely be open to more grey/cool day shoots.
Have a look at some of the captures from their Balmy Beach engagement session below and I think you’ll see braving the cold was well worth it.

Mistyna and Joe, I had such a nice afternoon with you. I can’t wait for your wedding at The Farm this Summer!

Strathmere Wedding | Julie & Kevin

August 25, 2017

Strathmere Wedding | Olive PhotographyI met Julie years ago through my own Maid of Honour (shoutout to Hannah!), and when it came time for her and Kevin’s wedding, pretty much a decade in the making, I was so thrilled that they wanted me to photograph the day!

They’ve settled in Ottawa, and this was my first time there. Strathmere is just outside the city, and it is just such a beautiful property. I wish I could share all the images I took of the place – there are several different buildings, gardens, event spaces, as well as a spa, restaurant and inn. Definitely an incredibly scenic choice for a wedding!

When the day came the weather was perfect – nice and cool, a *slight* threat of rain but it was clear all day and we got amazing light.

Julie and Kevin and their wedding party were just such a joy to be around. Actually, everyone there that day was! It’s clear they’ve fostered really deep connections with people.
And their reception? Well let’s just say it was lively! Their kissing game involved singing a love song and this wedding had BY FAR the most people serenading the couple I’ve ever seen at any wedding.

It was a really fun, and sweet day.

Julie and Kevin, congratulations on choosing forever – I am so happy for you both and wish you endless happiness!

— Here’s a look at some of their wedding highlights, and read more about their love story & wedding at the bottom of the post!

Here’s their love story, and a bit about their wedding!
Kevin and I went to different high schools and met through mutual friends in Grade 12. We quickly became friends and started dating shortly after,  prom was right around the corner of course! What everyone thought was just a prom date, quickly turned into a 4 year long distance relationship while we followed our own paths through University. This was followed by 4 years living with each other in Toronto and settling into our first home we purchased in Ottawa in December 2016.  Kevin works as a Kinesiologist and I as a harpist and government worker, although our career paths are very different we bring out the best in each other’s interests due to the admiration we have for one another’s talents. We are both very independent individuals brought together by love and friendship. We are each other’s best friends and feel so fortunate to have found each other.

In July 2016 we took a road trip from Ottawa to Canada’s East coast (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland)  to camp, hike, and to visit family and friends. One morning in Cape Breton we decided to hike the Skyline Trail, it is such a beautiful hike with views of mountains, the ocean and the Cabot trail that we had driven on throughout our time there. Along the hike we turned a corner and were greeted by a young moose grazing by the side of the trail. We had both seen many moose but never that close, it was an experience of a life time to watch such a beautiful creature in action (they are huge that close up!). At the peak of the hike we spotted two humpback whales in the ocean close by the shoreline, it was such a perfect day and little did I know these two experiences were not yet the grand finale! Once we finished the hike we stopped at a beautiful ocean view spot to have a picnic lunch, while exploring, Kevin distracted me for an instant and when I turned around he was then down on one knee!

What is your wedding theme / style / colour palette? Why did you choose this?
I chose a “grey hue” color palette, I love the way the colors tie into each other but also allow for individuality. I wanted the bridal party to choose their own style, colour of dress but also find a way to unify them. For our wedding I have tried to use local vendors/facilities. Supporting local business’ is really important to me.

What 3 words best describe your wedding?
Fun. Excitement. Love. We are so lucky to be surrounded by so much joy and fun loving individuals in our lives. We love having people around us and really want our wedding to be the biggest, most fun party we’ve hosted yet!

Venue: What made this venue the one for you?
As a harpist I have had the pleasure of playing for many weddings over the years in many venues. This venue is so beautiful, we love the outdoors and Strathmere has the most wonderful facilities and landscape.  I know from experience that the staff at Strathmere are all dedicated, supportive and organized individuals and that is important to me; to support a local venue who provide quality services in a beautiful location.

Photographer: How did you know you had found the right photographer?
I met Anastasia a few years ago through one of my bridesmaids, her genuine nature and calm aura was an instant pleasure. For years I spent time swooning over all the amazing  pieces of art she captures through her photos and I could tell by the reviews and my own personal encounter that her caring and supportive nature were exactly what we needed for our special day.

Any words of advice for couples planning their wedding?
Enjoy the process, it is so wonderful. Allow as many people to help as you can, it is a huge release of pressure and everyone loves getting involved and they appreciate the feeling of support they are offering you.

Pioneer Village Wedding | Morgan & Nicolas

August 11, 2017

Pioneer Village Wedding | Olive Photography Toronto
Pioneer Village Wedding

You may remember Morgan and Nicolas from their engagement session – Well, they’re now married!  Boy was it ever a great day.As you may remember, I went to elementary school with Morgan, and these days she actually works with my husband at the ROM! Naturally, he had to come as my assistant that day! (He’s in some photos with black shorts and a black buttoned shirt.)

Their wedding was in London, Ontario at Fanshawe Pioneer Village. We stayed over the night before in their old apartment, a house rented by his parents now as an Air BnB. The backyard was lush and lovely and I had to use it for some photos in the morning.

When the day came, it was just so wonderful. An outdoor ceremony under a canopy of trees, a barn reception with outdoor areas for people to explore and lounge, and a food truck dishing out dinner – the vibe of the day was relaxed, low-key, and full of heart.

There were lots of personal touches too:
– Nick’s mom & aunt did all the flowers and pottery for the favours
– Nick’s brother and brother’s girlfriend designed the logo for the favours
– Morgan’s dress was designed by Catherine Langlois, an amazing Toronto designer whom she used to babysit for
– Their young nephews (we’re talking barely above single digits young) did their DJing! (Their actual DJ unfortunately fell ill so their music-savvy nephews came to the rescue.)

I won’t say too much but rather will let the photos do the talking – Each time I look through their photos I get the warm and fuzzies. Congratulations again, Morgan & Nicolas!!

Romantic George Restaurant Wedding | Carolyn & Nick

July 28, 2017

George Restaurant Wedding Photos | Olive Photography TorontoGeorge Restaurant Wedding Photos | Olive Photography TorontoRomantic George Restaurant Wedding

Carolyn and Nick – Ah, how my heart holds this couple dear. They are two of the sweetest and kindest souls.

You may remember them from their engagement session.

Their intimate downtown Toronto restaurant wedding was held at the charming George Restaurant. The plan was originally to have their ceremony in the lovely outdoor courtyard, but Mother Nature had other plans and it rained all day. That’s ok, they say it’s good luck, and in the case of their wedding day I’d say that was certainly the case: The backup location for the ceremony was quite dark, but by golly did it make for a super romantic setting! Combined with the twinkling candlelight, this ceremony was so unique to anything I’d ever shot before.
In fact, since the skies were pretty dim that day so the intimate vibe came across through to their reception as well. Definitely different than what I usually photograph, but I really do love how cozy their photos feel!

Here’s a look at their Toronto restaurant wedding, along with some super sweet notes from Carolyn & Nick themselves at the end of the post 🙂

How did we meet?

I was a lonely single guy living in a town (Brantford) that was and still is about as exciting as…well….Boston Pizza on a Saturday night. The only reason I say that is because that, in fact, was the place to go for drinks on a Saturday night if you were a twenty something guy or girl in Brantford Ontario!

It was a lonely weeknight in Brantford when Brad Meloche and his soon to be wife Deanna Webb invited me to be their third wheel and attend a birthday party in downtown Toronto that weekend for Deanna’s sister’s best friend Kelly Jeffs.  Despite the fact that I didn’t know anyone outside of Brad and Dee going to the party overly well I decided it was this or….Boston Pizza.

Fast forwarding to that fateful night in April of 2012, I was standing in line outside of a bar called “Stones Place” with a group of people waiting to get inside while embarrassingly listening to Sarah (Deanna’s sister) tell me in her soft spoken tone (sarcasm) that she was going to set me up with Kelly Jeffs’  sister Carolyn. I was trying to change the subject and awkwardly dismiss Sarah’s offers in line mainly because:

I don’t like being “set-up”. It’s awkward and when this so called “set-up” has happened in the past, the rest of the night you can feel the eyes of the “setter-upper” on you and you’re expected to give frequent updates throughout the night based on your progress…..Not for me.

It was not long before Sarah returned to introduce me to Carolyn Jeffs, a cute girl who looked to be around my age and looked about as embarrassed as I probably did throughout the introduction. Later in the night I was much more…courageous than earlier and as a result, began talking with Carolyn and asking her questions to find out what she was all about. The conversation was going well and this resulted in some dancing followed by more conversation.

The night was coming to an end and I was just getting to know this fun and cute nurse who was very easy to talk to. Being as my birthday was the following week Carolyn invited me to Toronto for dinner to celebrate my birthday which ended up being our first official date! The rest is history.

At this time I think it’s only appropriate to thank Brad and Deanna Meloche for inviting me out that night, Kelly Jeffs for it being her birthday, Sarah Nicholson for kindly/aggressively introducing me to Carolyn and last but not least Carolyn…..for drinking enough that first night to think I was up to her standards or at least……close enough.  -Nick

What is your wedding theme/style?

To be honest, I don’t think that we really came up with a theme or colour palette. We just went with the feel. If we liked the feel, we said yes ☺.

What 3 words best describe your wedding?

Simple, intimate, kick-ass

What made this venue the one for you?

Nick and I both walked into this venue and immediately fell in love. Again, the ‘feel’ was right. Inside the restaurant there is a cozy, intimate and romantic air. The restaurant has beautiful décor – I especially love the vines that cover the windows and the exposed brick! But my favourite part is the courtyard out back. Surrounded by old building, you forget that you are in the busyness of downtown Toronto. Not only that, George is known for its amazing food. This again, was something we wanted to have as part of our special day.

How did you know that you found the right photographer?

I had been looking online for restaurant venues in Toronto when I came across Anastasia’s photos from a wedding at Caffino Restaurant; they were stunning! You could literally see and feel the love that this couple had for each other through her photographs. Looking at her reviews, no one had a bad thing to say. I immediately picked up my phone to leave her a message. Within five minutes she had called me back and I felt like I was talking to an old friend. After meeting her in person, I remember going home and telling Nick that I wanted to be actual friends with her! Anastasia’s creativity and talent is evident through her work. In addition, her warm personality makes anyone feel comfortable in front of the camera. Nick and I were absolutely sure that we found the right photographer for our big day.

—

You are the sweetest! I felt that way after hanging out with you guys too!
Thanks so much for inviting me into your life to document this happy time – It’s truly been such an honour <3

Alton Mill Wedding | Julia & Josh

April 14, 2017

Sunset wedding photos - Olive Photography Toronto

Soo, going through this wedding to pick out photos for the blog made me tear up.
Yup, I’ll admit it. I’m such a sap for love-filled gazes – and this one had SO many.
I especially loved the tearful and heartfelt moments with the parents and grandparents. *sigh*
And their first dance under the twinkly lights!

Julia and Josh met at Ryerson while doing their undergrad – funny story, I though Josh looked familiar when we initially met, and then we discovered we actually had a class together too! Small world, eh?

On their wedding day they got ready at the Millcroft Inn, then got married at Alton Mill. Both locations are so lovely, surrounded by picturesque nature.

Their day was so beautiful. Read all about it and their love at the end of the photos below – and until you get there, enjoy checking out these memories from their wedding!

So heartwarming, no?

And here are some words from the couple themselves!

Your Love Story: How did you meet? Do you have a sweet proposal story?

We are Josh and Julia and we met in university while studying in the same program. Since then, we’ve made each other laugh every day!

What is your wedding theme / style / colour palette? Why did you choose this?

The theme just naturally evolved from our love for summer nights outside on a beautifully lit patio with string lights, our closest friends and family with good food and wine. From there, we used many local vendors and small shops off etsy to make it more personal. That’s actually how I found my dress! It’s from a talented designer from Vancouver that started on etsy a couple of years ago, making dresses with the help of her mother.  She now sells her dresses all over the world. There were many personal touches, including some amazing macaroons used as favours and made hand painted with flowers by the groom’s mother.

What 3 words best describe your wedding?
Intimate, relaxed and rustic.

Favourite wedding moment(s)?
The entire day was so special and fun, filled with many unexpected tears of joy. Our ceremony took place outside on the grass, under an arbour Josh built with birch we picked up on one of our hikes. We also loved our first dance on the patio with our guests surrounding us and the string lights on.

Venue: What made this venue the one for you?

It’s a little gem we found in Caledon many years ago, and quickly became our favourite place to visit on a Sunday morning for coffee. When the time came to plan our wedding, there was no doubt we’d have it at Alton Mill.  The beautiful outdoors, old stone walls, patio with romantic lights and all the history it has to offer made it for the perfect venue.

Photographer: How did you know you had found the right photographer?
We were looking for someone that captures the natural light and candid photos we like and knew we found our photographer when we met Anastasia. She was the calm and fun presence we needed to make us feel at ease on the big day.

Any words of advice for couples planning their wedding?
Start the work early, pick the details that make you happy and have fun while you go through the process.

Toronto Wedding Photo Locations: James Gardens

March 3, 2017

Toronto wedding photo locations - James Gardens Wedding Photos | Olive PhotographyToronto wedding photo locations: James Gardens

Sometimes it can be difficult figuring out where to take your wedding portraits.
Some venues have really great spots immediately surrounding them, but others maybe not so much.
So, I thought I’d share a really lovely location that Liane and Justin found for their wedding portraits: James Gardens.
The area is filled with gorgeous lush gardens that are a perfect balance of manicured and natural-feeling.
There are interesting architectural features like bridges, gazebos & paths, along with the natural landscape.
It’s located in the West part of Toronto off Royal York Rd, mid-way between Eglinton and Dundas.
Here are a few images that show some of the landscape that you might be interested in for your own wedding portraits!

And here’s their love story!!

Jason and I met in the Spring of 2013 and we immediately had a strong connection. The first time we met was a memorable one, we were at a City and Colour concert and after ordering a few drinks, Jason realized he didn’t have money on him, leaving me to pick up the tab. Luckily, I decided to give him a chance to redeem himself and agreed to a second date. We still joke about it to this day.

While first getting to know each other, Jason was as charming as ever, always coming up with the most thoughtful gestures and planning the most romantic nights out. We have been inseparable ever since and love spending time together, whether it is embarking on new adventures, long walks in the City, travelling to new places, or simply hanging out at home having dinner together, there’s no better place than in each other’s company.

Jason proposed to me in the Fall of 2015, we were in Vancouver, which also ended up being one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to!  We spent a few days there climbing mountains, going on hikes, driving around the surrounding area and sightseeing in the City. We were getting ready to go out on one of our last nights in the City, it was a Friday night, and he suggested going for a walk on the beach and then for dinner afterwards. I agreed and when we got there, the beach was SO crowded. Jason was also acting unusual, being uncharacteristically antsy with sweaty hands. I kept asking him if everything was ok. Jason made us walk up and down the boardwalk several times; I realized afterwards, it was because he was trying to find the perfect spot to propose that was away from the crowd. Once he found the perfect spot, or rather, the only spot that wasn’t surrounded by masses of people, he asked me to marry him. That moment was filled with so many emotions, I was so shocked! Looking back now I realize how nerve-wracking it must have been for him! And now, just a few months away until the big day, I can’t picture my life with anyone else but him.

We chose Liberty Village as the location for our engagement session because Jason lived in Liberty when we first met, and it was one of the first areas of the City we got to enjoy together, and also where our relationship first flourished. We had our furbaby Dharma join us for part of the session because she’s such a big part of our lives!

This is our story and a little about us, we hope you enjoyed it!

Gladstone Hotel Winter Wedding | Belinda & Conor

February 8, 2017

Gladstone Hotel Wedding | Olive Photography Toronto Gladstone Hotel Wedding | Olive Photography TorontoGladstone Hotel Wedding | Olive Photography TorontoBelinda and Conor had a cozy, intimate Winter wedding at the Gladstone Hotel in downtown Toronto.
They opted to keep their wedding party to just the two of them, and since it was so cold we did all their photos on-premises as well.
Lucky for us The Gladstone Hotel has some super dynamic window light to play with!
The bright sun that day created a super interesting juxtaposition against the shadows of the interior, creating a slightly more ‘moody’ feel to the photographs than I usually take, but I really dig the effect! They had two ceremonies, one being a Jewish Ketubah signing & unveiling with immediate family, and the other being a Western ceremony with the rest of their guests in attendance.

Being winter, the window light had turned to night before their ceremony began, but the rustic brick walls and gorgeous ceremony floral arch by Coriander Girl provided other visually gorgeous elements to their wedding. And their special day was designed and setup beautifully by wedding planner Blush & Bowties.

I adore downtown Toronto wedding venues – there’s a laid back vibe about them that makes those weddings feel unique and cool.

With that said, I’ll let you check out some highlights from Belinda & Conor’s Gladstone Hotel wedding!

 From the couple themselves:

Tell us your proposal story:
Conor proposed last June while we were on vacation in France. It was 4 days into our trip and the first day that wasn’t raining in Paris. We took a walk through Luxembourg Garden and he proposed on a park bench.

What is your wedding theme / style? Why did you choose this?
Romantic. We wanted something simple, yet beautiful.
