Miller Lash House Wedding | Neha & Jeff

May 2, 2018

Miller Lash House Wedding | Olive Photography TorontoThis was my very first time photographing an Indian wedding – little did I know I was in for such a treat. So many vibrant colours and beautiful traditions! Because Jeff comes from a different background, the symbolism of each step of the ceremony was explained which helped to really appreciate how beautiful the rituals truly are.
Also truly spectacular is the warmth and deep sense of love and gratitude this couple exudes. There were of course many smiles, but also many tears as their hearts flowed openly from the joy of the day.

Miller Lash House was the perfect choice for their wedding – the front courtyard was ideal for the pre-ceremony events (when the families embraced each other – ugh my heart!), the back lawn that faced the vine-covered Miller Lash House main building was so great for the ceremony, and their outdoor tent was fantastic for their al fresco reception.  And, as if the venue wasn’t already perfect, the surrounding nature was the icing on the cake for portraits.

I won’t say more since they open up about their special day at the bottom of the post – so here are some highlights from their wonderful multicultural wedding day!

So, so beautiful, wasn’t it?
Here are some words from Neha & Jeff!!

Your Love Story: How did you meet? Do you have a sweet proposal story?
We met at work, dated on the down low for 2 years and then got engaged in Berkeley, California during my 2nd year of MBA. Jeff flew down to my student house secretly, coordinated with my roommates so that he could be in the house to light it up with candles and created a beautiful scrapbook album full of photographs of our favourite memories. He proposed when I got home from a long day at school, running on 2 hours of sleep from the previous night. It was deeply touching.

What is your wedding theme / style / colour palette? Why did you choose this?
It’s an Indian wedding. Living in North America, I appreciate my Indian heritage and am really holding on to what I know since I know so little. That said, I don’t identify 100% with indian culture, so the wedding is our best attempt at representing all the aspects I know and love as well as the western traditions that we both identify with as Canadians. We have left the colour up to the guests and wedding party since Indian weddings are so colourfully celebratory. The florals/background will feel very fresh and green with white, fragrant flowering. The flowers are mainly jasmine as a nod to what its like to walk through an Indian market where they sell strings and strings of jasmine that women buy to wear in their hair daily.

What 3 words best describe your wedding?
Authentic, Warm, Chic

Venue: What made this venue the one for you?
There are no other venues that have such beautiful greenery and such an understated elegant décor in the GTA. The house format is really welcoming and warm and we love greenery and florals and wanted to be surrounded in it. Also, if it were possible, we would have gotten married out of our families houses, which is what this invokes.

Photographer: How did you know you had found the right photographer?
She was really down to earth and genuine and a warm person herself. She also prioritized moments over poses and overly planned compositions which felt like perhaps we could come across like our real selves in the photos. The photos also looked warm and had a good design aesthetic despite the lack of overt posing.

Any words of advice for couples planning their wedding?
Start with at least 3 to 5 days of planned “think” time with your partner. So that you “plan the work, then work the plan”. Also avoid having your engagement be spread over life changing times (i.e. school, while geographically separated, a big move or a career search < we had all four!!!). Try to plan your proposal/engagement so that it’s the only big thing you’re planning and then enjoy that process – it’s actually super fun.

Anything else you’d like to share?
Warning: It’s going to be chaotic (re: Indian weddings) but super super fun. ☺
Thank you!

The Great Hall Wedding | Alanna & Jimmy

November 29, 2017

The Great Hall Wedding Photos | Olive Photography Toronto The Great Hall Wedding Photos | Olive Photography TorontoThe Great Hall Wedding Photography

Alanna & Jimmy got married on a Good Friday, and what a Good Friday it was.

Both of them wore grins from ear to ear, and I couldn’t help but join them in that throughout the day and later as I worked on their photos.

They enlisted the help of wedding planner Jessica of Bisous Events who elevated the look of the day to an understated elegance that struck the perfect balance of opulence (with the lush fabrics, incredible florals by Hunt & Gather and beautiful place settings) and comfortable intimacy (with the understated romantic candle votives, flowing foliage and enough space for the design to breathe without feeling overwhelming). The whole day was so tasteful.

The Great Hall is a super interesting and different historic venue in Toronto’s West End.
There are several really lovely spaces to use – light & airy bright rooms that can be used for ceremony (as in the case of this wedding) and even cocktails or a smaller reception, and a larger main hall that has a theatre vibe. This is due to a stage – perfect for this wedding’s live band! – and the balcony that spans the perimeter of the upper level, overlooking the dining/dancing main space.

There’s definitely a charm to this venue with its old wood floors, crown molding and hand painted lettering labeling the spaces. I really enjoyed photographing at this unique Toronto venue, and I adored working with this incredibly sweet couple!

Alanna and Jimmy, it’s been beyond a joy being a part of this special time for you!

— Without further adieu, here are some highlights from their day! (And read below for some thoughts from the couple themselves!)

Archeo Wedding: Bridget & Nick

June 29, 2017

Streetcar wedding photos - Olive Photography TorontoQuite possibly the most adorable couple you will ever see.
They exchanged vows in their first home together – the party room of their condo building (what a neat idea!).
TTC travellers, they hopped on the Cherry St. streetcar. Fitting, since their last name is Cherry!
Then in the Distillery District, and they had an intimate Archeo wedding reception – complete with loads of laughter and emotion.
This couple and their family wear their hearts on their sleeves in the best kind of way.
Here are some highlights from their wedding, along with reflections from the happy couple themselves at the end.
I dare you to try not to smile.

SO adorable, right?
Here’s a bit more about them & their special day, from the Bridget & Nick themselves!

Your Love Story: How did you meet? Do you have a sweet proposal story?
Nicholas and I met on a blind date in our last year of university. Sci Formal is a very exclusive, exciting event at Queen’s University. It is the kind of event that people don’t want to miss and anyone who knew me had listen to me talk about it since my first year of university.

In order to attend, each graduating engineer is required to complete forty hours of volunteer service toward the design and creative work of transforming the space. All other attendees are by invite only.

Luckily for me, Nicholas had an extra ticket and I had been vocally expressing my “I don’t care who takes me attitude,” to anyone who would listen and a mutual friend connected us on the day of the event. Between my six roommates and I, we managed to pull me together in record time. And my dashing date? He showed up in a kilt and offered me his sgian-dubh (aka. sock knife) to help me at our pre-event dinner and insisted that I didn’t need to carry a purse around all night because he had a sporran (aka. kilt purse). To be honest, it all started off a little weird.

We had a great time at the event together: we danced; we drank; we kissed. When it came time to head home, Nicholas insisted that since he was wearing a skirt, that is was only appropriate that I walk him home. He said he was feeling sick and didn’t invite me in (I took the hint, insisted that he take the money for the ticket and wished him well for the future). We both woke up with strep throat (yay!) and a hangover. I immediately felt bad for how our night ended and texted Nicholas.

Texts turned into run-ins, run-ins turned into planned dates, and planned dates brought us through two years of long-distance and eventually we moved in together and are where we are today. It wasn’t love at first sight, but we grow more in love each day.

Our Proposal:
In February of this year, after traveling up in a crazy snowstorm (cue a pit stop at Sawdust City Brewing Co.) we romantically skated around the skate trail at Arrowhead Provincial Park surrounded by freshly fallen snow. Nicholas pulled a ring out of his pocket and in his usual “stick it to tradition” way, he asked me if I would be his best friend forever. We’re pretty cute like that. So it’s been a pretty exciting year for us!

What is your wedding colour palette? Gold – White – Navy

What 3 words best describe your wedding? Intimate – Loving – Fun

Venue: What made this venue the one for you? We wanted to celebrate close to home in a place where we could invite our friends and family on the perfect date with us. It was very important that we showcase some of the everyday fun and beauty we have access to in our neighbourhood.

Photographer: How did you know you had found the right photographer? I knew we had the right photographer before we had really seriously started talking about getting married.

Any words of advice for couples planning their wedding? Anyone can recreate a beautiful picture-perfect wedding, but make sure you plan a wedding that reflects you as a couple…or your guests may one day remember attending the wedding, but not remember that it was yours!

Gladstone Hotel Winter Wedding | Belinda & Conor

February 8, 2017

Gladstone Hotel Wedding | Olive Photography Toronto Gladstone Hotel Wedding | Olive Photography TorontoGladstone Hotel Wedding | Olive Photography TorontoBelinda and Conor had a cozy, intimate Winter wedding at the Gladstone Hotel in downtown Toronto.
They opted to keep their wedding party to just the two of them, and since it was so cold we did all their photos on-premises as well.
Lucky for us The Gladstone Hotel has some super dynamic window light to play with!
The bright sun that day created a super interesting juxtaposition against the shadows of the interior, creating a slightly more ‘moody’ feel to the photographs than I usually take, but I really dig the effect! They had two ceremonies, one being a Jewish Ketubah signing & unveiling with immediate family, and the other being a Western ceremony with the rest of their guests in attendance.

Being winter, the window light had turned to night before their ceremony began, but the rustic brick walls and gorgeous ceremony floral arch by Coriander Girl provided other visually gorgeous elements to their wedding. And their special day was designed and setup beautifully by wedding planner Blush & Bowties.

I adore downtown Toronto wedding venues – there’s a laid back vibe about them that makes those weddings feel unique and cool.

With that said, I’ll let you check out some highlights from Belinda & Conor’s Gladstone Hotel wedding!

 From the couple themselves:

Tell us your proposal story:
Conor proposed last June while we were on vacation in France. It was 4 days into our trip and the first day that wasn’t raining in Paris. We took a walk through Luxembourg Garden and he proposed on a park bench.

What is your wedding theme / style? Why did you choose this?
Romantic. We wanted something simple, yet beautiful.

Estates of Sunnybrook/McLean House Wedding Open House

Some of you may be aware already of the open houses that venues throw annually for engaged couples planning their wedding, and if you aren’t then let me tell you about them!

Venues across the city open their doors in the winter time – right after ‘engagement season’ (yes, that’s a thing!) – to showcase their space as a potential place to host your nuptials, and also to share some great vendors and wedding planning inspiration.

On Sunday, January 22nd the Estates of Sunnybrook hosted their open house, and I thought I’d take my camera to snap a few photos. I’m glad I did, as the photos were picked up for a feature of the event on Eventsource – fun!

There are actually 3 separate spaces at the Estates of Sunnybrook: The Vaughan Estate, the McLean House (my personal fave!), and the Coach House. Each space is unique and has different capacities (More info on their website).

I took my camera out at the McLean House when I ran into Christina of Cocoa Cakery – her cakes & desserts are works of delicious art!

The space in the McLean House is just lovely with beautiful architectural features, wonderful natural light, and the grounds beyond the walls are also beautiful – a fantastic all-in-one spot to host an intimate wedding or special event.

Here’s a little taste of what I saw there, including flowers from Fun Flower Stand and Berries & Blooms, and candle installations by Helix Candles.

P.S. If you’re planning a wedding at the Estates of Sunnybrook/McLean House and need a photographer, I really enjoyed the property and shooting there – get in touch!

xo,

Earth to Table Farm Wedding | Caitlin & Josh

January 4, 2017

Earth to Table Farm Wedding - Ontario Farm Wedding - Olive Photography GTA Farm Wedding - Olive Photography GTA Farm Wedding - Olive PhotographyCaitlin and Josh had an Earth to Table Farm (by Pearl Events) wedding – it’s a secluded and *stunning* venue. A cool thing about this place is they happen to grow many of the ingredients in their delicious food!
And the grounds are just SO scenic and lovely.

Their wedding day was absolutely beautiful and full of joy. My favourite moment by far is Josh’s emotional reaction when he saw Caitlin during their first look. Guys, it was so touching. I got teary myself. Aaah.

Your Love Story: How did you meet? Do you have a sweet proposal story?

We both went to high school together but weren’t in the same year (Josh was 2 grades above me). We never actually spoke in high school (although we both knew who each other were), but connected 6 years later after Josh recognized me in the elevator of his building while I was looking for my first apartment in the city. He reached out online after that and the rest is history. 5 ½ years later we couldn’t be more excited to tie the knot.

What is your wedding theme / style / colour palette? Why did you choose this?

Rustic romance. Our colours are blush, white and gold with a lot of greenery. Our venue is set on a stunning farm, so we didn’t want our wedding colours to overpower any of the natural beauty of the space.

What 3 words best describe your wedding? Romantic, dreamy and fun.

Venue: What made this venue the one for you?
We looked at a few venues (which were all beautiful) but they didn’t feel very private. The moment we pulled up to The Farm, we knew it was “the one”. We were so giddy the wedding coordinator that met us there didn’t need to sell us on anything. We immediately asked what dates they had available and booked the only weekend left in the books. The team at Pearle Weddings have been so incredible, and have helped make this such an enjoyable planning experience.

Photographer: How did you know you had found the right photographer?
We LOVE online reviews and do a ton of online research before doing anything. As soon as we came across Anastasia’s glowing 5 star reviews, and saw her work, we knew she was the one. We actually didn’t even meet in person before booking. We just had a feeling and we were right!

Any words of advice for couples planning their wedding?
HAVE FUN! Enjoy every single little moment. It truly goes by SO fast and before you know it your wedding day is 1 month away (AH! We are so excited). Remember that it’s your day but be thankful for the friends and family who will dedicate so much of their time. Work together as a team, ask for help and don’t sweat the small stuff.

Anything else you’d like to share? We have to give a big shout out to all of our wedding vendors. We are truly blown away by how amazing everyone has been. We feel SO lucky that we picked such amazing vendors to help with our special day.

Park Hyatt Wedding | Tammy & John

January 4, 2017

ROM wedding photos | Olive PhotographyPark Hyatt rooftop wedding photos | Olive PhotographyPark Hyatt Wedding
Tammy and John had an intimate downtown Toronto wedding at the Park Hyatt hotel across the street from the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM).
They started their day at Tammy’s parents’ house – they have a beautiful large backyard where Tammy’s father lovingly hung lanterns for their backyard wedding photos.
Their ceremony was located at St. Bonaventure Church, a lovely space with soaring ceilings.
We then walked around the streets of Toronto for some city wedding portraits, and then we had to take advantage of the amazing Toronto skyline view on the Hyatt’s rooftop!
Their intimate reception at the Hyatt hotel was full of laughs and love.
Here are a few photos from their sweet, intimate city wedding <3

Modern Airship37 Wedding | Amanda & Markus

December 17, 2016

Airship37 Wedding | Olive Photography Airship37 Wedding Toronto | Olive PhotographyAmanda and Markus’ downtown Toronto wedding day at Distillery District’s Airship37 was first and foremost a day of love – both between the two of them, and amongst everyone who was there.

They had so many relatives who visited them from around the world who, along with everyone else in attendance, had such affection and adoration for this sweet couple. It’s no wonder, they are two of the kindest, most thoughtful people you will ever meet.

Their wedding was also a wonderful reflection who who they are and what means most to them, with tonnes of personal touches. They put so much of themselves into this wedding. For example, Amanda made the candle wedding favours (she runs an exceptional all-natural soy candle company called Woodsmoke & Olive), her and her bridesmaids & family made the pies, cake and treats on their dessert table, her mother did all their bouquets and centrepieces, her maid of honour did all the calligraphy, a friend made the invites and they infused their own personalty and aesthetic throughout all aspects of the day.
It was really amazing to see how people came together to help make this day as personal as it was.

It was very clear that they wanted to have a meaningful celebration with their nearest and dearest infused with their awesome style, which is my kind of wedding! I spoke with them a few times as they got closer to their wedding and learned that their home was sprawling with DIY projects, and I was super excited to see the fruits of their labour. It was just what I expected: cool, relaxed modern vibe infused with timeless elements, and a few quirky details that highlighted their personality. (e.g. A tie clip saying, ‘You’re the Obi Wan for me’ that Amanda gifted to Markus, and a cute cutout of their dog Olive’s face since she couldn’t attend. Though she did make an appearance for their first look!)

Here are a few peeks at their Airship37/downtown Toronto wedding — And check out the bottom of the post for words from the couple themselves!

From Amanda & Markus!

** What is your wedding theme / style / colour palette? Why did you choose this?
We didn’t have a set theme in mind I guess if we had to name it, it would be urban jungle. We loved the look of lots of fresh greenery but wanted a cool relaxed modern/city vibe that fit our style. Colour palette would be greenery (ferns, rosemary and moss) with berry colours – deep plum and maroon, and brown glass that fit with the fall season, with accents of grey, black and white to keep it modern and not too rustic/farmhouse feel.

** What 3 words best describe your wedding?
Style: Modern Urban Jungle ; Vibe: City Backyard Party.

** Favourite wedding moment(s)?
Amanda – There were so many amazing fun moments of the day it’s hard to choose just one. But for me (as cheesy as this may sound) my favourite moments were any time I was with Markus, particularly during our ceremony just before our vows holding hands looking at each other. For no reason that I can explain, I was a nervous wreck the whole morning before the ceremony, tearing up really easily, except once I saw Markus for our first look. I got nervous again right before the ceremony waiting around and was shaking like a leaf before walking down the isle (partly nerves, partly from cold as it was very windy taking photos outside). As soon as I got to Markus and held his hands I felt so calm and all the nerves associated with “all eyes on you” just melted away.
Markus – One favourite moment was our first look, seeing Amanda for the first time that day before the ceremony. Other moments would be Amanda’s brother’s kind words during our ceremony that made me tear up, and conversely my dad’s speech that made everyone in the room crack up.

** Venue: What made this venue the one for you?
We joke that we were lazy when it came to wedding planning as we didn’t hunt around a lot or at all (including my dress) but I think we just knew what we wanted. This was the first venue we saw and we loved it’s industrial vibe, it seemed very us. When we met with the planners there, they were so relaxed and laid back and open to whatever we wanted it was great. They let us bring in our fire pit from our backyard which ended up being amazing since it was such a cool fall night people got to take a breather from the epic dance party and make s’mores and get cozy by the fire. They also had a ping pong table available to us which everyone who wasn’t too into dancing just loved, it was busy all night. Beyond that they were super helpful and the staff were on the ball with everything. I‘ve heard a lot of people say they didn’t get to try the food at their wedding but the head server there made sure we had passed hors d’oeuvres sent to us as well as our specialty cocktail. They were fantastic.

** Photographer: How did you know you had found the right photographer?
We found Anastasia through online wedding blogs. Her company name caught our attention as our dog’s name is Olive, but her photography style is what really attracted us. We knew she was the right photographer after we met with her. Anastasia is just the most kind-hearted, down-to-earth and genuine person you will ever meet. I think in any sales related industry you can meet a lot of people that are fake nice. Anastasia is not one of those people. She is so dedicated to making you feel relaxed and comfortable and you can tell she truly loves what she does. We both are not comfortable having a lot of attention on us and being photographed, but during our engagement session with her all that went away. She really has a way of making you feel at ease and comfortable. We walked away feeling like we had just spent the day hanging out with an old friend. On our wedding day it was so great to have her calming presence around but she was also so professional. She was able to guide everyone through photos efficiently keeping us on time and was practically invisible during the ceremony & reception getting photos of everything like a photog-ninja!

** Any words of advice for couples planning their wedding?
We had a lot of DIY items at our wedding. It can definitely help to save money in some areas but it takes a lot of time so be prepared to do a lot of work in advance if you undertake DIY projects. We were so fortunate to have amazingly talented friends and family to help out. One of my MOHs Sarah does calligraphy and worked her calligraphy magic on everything – the envelope addressing, signs at our wedding, seating chart & place cards – she was so generous with her time. Another friend designed the invites and some signs we had outside our venue, and our mothers did all the bouquet’s, corsages, flowers on the table and even nursed some ferns & rosemary plants for two months. We were truly blessed to have all this help. We did a lot of stuff ourselves too and with that, our first piece of advice is know when to let things go. As it got closer to our wedding day there were things we had planned on doing that we just had to decide that it wasn’t a big enough impact on the day and to just let it go. Pinterest & wedding blogs are great inspiration but at some point you have to just stop looking at them or you just keep adding to your pile of DIY tasks. Another key piece of advice is to stick to things that will really be memorable. No one is going to notice or care what colour napkins you use but they will care about the food, or remember that hanging greenery that really makes a visual impact. A final piece of advice is that if you don’t have a wedding planner (we didn’t) have a day of coordinator or a friend who you trust to coordinate for you. We were INCREDIBLY lucky again to have a friend who does event planning & coordination who spent so much time helping to set everything up and execute our vision of our wedding day. It took a lot of stress out of the day having someone we could rely on to set everything up and make sure the day ran smoothly.

** Anything else you’d like to share?
Amanda: Everyone always talks about how their wedding day is the best day of their life. As we got closer to our wedding day and the stress started to build I really kept thinking maybe we should have eloped and saved us money and stress. However after going through it, I totally understand it now. I’ve never before been surrounded by so much love and support. The love and support our family & friends showed us by donating their time and talents which I will forever be grateful for, and just the happiness everyone showed us on that day was SO worth it. It was just magical. It was the most fun day and I’m still feeling all warm and fuzzy about it. And while I’m sure we will have many amazing days in our life together, this will be one that stands out that I will never forget.

‘The Day After’ – Styled Shoot

March 23, 2016

Toronto wedding photographer - Olive PhotographyToronto wedding photographer - Olive Photography Toronto wedding photographer - Olive Photography You spend so much time planning your wedding, but what happens the Day After your wedding? When the festivities are over, you get to wake up next to your life partner, and savour the new reality.
Sleeping in, enjoying some leftover cake with breakfast, and lots of cozy cuddling. This styled shoot was quite a spur-of-the-moment decision this Winter and I worked with some phenomenal Toronto vendors to get it together within a month. Though it was cold out, we styled this shoot with the nearly-approaching Spring in mind.Because, just as Spring is a beautiful new start after Winter, the day after your wedding is the start of a new journey together.

We found inspiration in the lovely blue blooms – muscari and forget-me-nots – that are amongst the first flowers to appear as the weather starts changing. We carried these blues throughout this sweet shoot – from the fabrics, stationery and other details to their florals and her incredible Art Deco star sapphire antique engagement ring. We also brought in complimentary touches of orange with kumquats in the bouquet and on the cake, as well as the jam they spread on their morning scones.

Toronto wedding photographer - Olive Photography Toronto wedding photographer - Olive Photography Being foodies, they also had tiny little forks in the boutonniere and bouquet.
Which were super adorable – though not quite as adorable as the amazing chemistry and love between these two. (Yes, they’re a husband and wife in real life!)

We followed these two as they eased into their first day as newlyweds and then ventured out for their honeymoon.
They first took it easy with breakfast in bed, sweet and silly moments reading to each other, romantic candles and cozy moments, and a tablescape with details from their wedding festivities – including cake that they of course had to dig into!

Experimenting with Moody Photography

March 23, 2016

Moody Toronto Wedding Photography - Olive Photography Moody Toronto Wedding Photography - Olive Photography Moody Photography - Olive Photography Toronto Moody Toronto Wedding Photography - Olive Photography
Moody Photography – Experimenting & Shooting for Fun.

Photographers can have PD days too. Professional Development is something I think is super important – it’s good to always keep learning, always get creative and try new things. Toronto wedding photography in the Winter can be drab and chilly, but you can actually get some pretty interesting indoor shots if you have a room with good light!

On Sunday I had some fun at a photography workshop experimenting with different ways to shoot. The cool thing about Winter (other than it being ‘cool’ – heh heh) is having some free time to try out new things with some personal shooting.

What’s funny about these photos is that the rooms were actually quite bright! But a few adjustments in the camera brought these photos to a super mooody and kind of cool look.

It’s a departure from how I usually shoot, but I kind of like it and may incorporate some more shots like this into wedding season this year.

What do you think of this look? Super different and interesting, no?
