Here’s this sweet couple’s love story, from the couple themselves!

Johnny and I met in September of 2011 at Sheridan College. We started as strangers, we soon became friends and after spending more and more time together throughout the school year we officially started dating on the last day, April 20th, 2012. We quickly became inseparable doing all the things couples do. Whether it was weekend trips to Niagara on the Lake, concerts, eating out, cooking or traveling, we filled our time outside of work with each other. Our travels have taken us to Washington DC, Las Vegas, Montreal, Quebec City, Nashville, New York City, Michigan, Saratoga Springs, New Brunswick, Halifax, and Maine. I tease Johnny to this day about the way he made our relationship official, which was by holding my hand on our first date, which of course I didn’t become aware of until after the fact…about 3 months after to be exact.

Johnny proposed on Christmas Day of 2014, or should we say Johnny’s mom proposed. As the family sat around the Christmas tree during his proposal, Johnny’s mom was so caught in the moment she yelled out in excitement “will you marry him.” The proposal was everything I could have asked for and more. Family close by and a beautiful scrap book that Johnny spent the months before meticulously preparing. On the final page was a present wrapped up. Johnny asked me to stand up and turn around, when I turned back he was on one knee proposing, it was like an out of body experience. The tears that had started to flow while we were flipping through the book continued to flow as he proposed and to this day neither of us can remember what he said. However, the most important thing is that I said YES!

When we were deciding where we wanted to do our engagement shoot we really wanted a place that brought fond memories and represented our style. Which is why we chose Niagara on the Lake and Lailey Wineries. Johnny and I have spent a lot of time during the summer and even the winter months in Niagara since we met, visiting the shops and vineyards. We couldn’t be happier with the way the day turned out for our engagement shoot and are so grateful for the many beautiful shots Anastasia was able to capture. Natural beauty, old world charm and character are exactly what we love about Niagara on the Lake and it comes through beautifully in our engagement photos.

Thanks for such a wonderful evening you two! I had such fun with you and cannot wait for your special day!

Love the idea of ice cream in an engagement session, you may enjoy this Dutch Dreams e-sesh!
Or maybe you’re into supporting local wineries/breweries? This couple included Steam Whistle bottles because they’ll have their wedding at Steam Whistle Brewery.

Ali, Marijan, Oskar and Luka are the sweetest family.
This session was a family and engagement session rolled into one – I love that they wanted to include the boys in their engagement photos since they are such a big part of their lives.
We went to Toronto’s High Park during the heigh of fall, as the leaves were changing to brilliant hues of yellow and orange. The leaves had started falling off the trees, coating the ground in colour. It was a perfect day for a fall family session!

Of course the inner child in me HAD to suggest playing with the leaves. And of COURSE the boys were excited about that.

We walked around, and took photos as we played – it was such fun.

I really love family photography – it means so much to me that I get to capture such happy memories.
Hope you enjoyed checking out some of my faves from this session!

If you enjoyed this family session, perhaps you’ll also enjoy this one, or this one!

Eva and David were looking for a Toronto maternity photographer and I’m so glad they reached out to me – what an honour to document such a momentous time in a couple’s life!

They wanted to take some laid back photos in their natural environment to commemorate their first pregnancy & their soon-to-born baby boy.
They invited me to their condo where they had prepared an adorable modern nursery with baby’s first shoes and onesie, and a stuffy that had been gifted by a family member. They also put some super cute decals on the wall – Why aren’t those more common for adults? They’re so fun! ha
We then went for a walk to a nearby park, something they’ve been doing for exercise together as Eva nears her delivery due date. It’s important to get that circulation going, even though it may get progressively more difficult to move with the expanding belly and growing baby.
Here are some of my favourite shots from their relaxed Toronto maternity session 🙂

I had such a great time getting to know these two and photographing their special day. It was especially touching for me because Ali was friends with my brother who has passed away. A number of his friends were at the wedding and it felt like he was there smiling on their day.

Their day was intimate and low key – no wedding party, no special dances, just a casual, stylish gathering of their nearest and dearest.

They had a downtown Toronto wedding – getting ready at the Shangri-La hotel then having their ceremony and reception at the Gardiner Museum. Such a fantastic spot for a wedding! Though, I may be a bit biased – My husband and I got married there as well! Funny story – we actually had the exact same number of guests. How crazy is that?

The space is perfect for a modern downtown Toronto wedding that is centrally located and fantastic for photos, both on-site and nearby. The light in the Gardiner Museum is amazing as there are floor-to-ceiling windows all around the space. And a cool thing about hosting a wedding there is the museum is open for guests to explore! There are also a number of outdoor patios too, and the design and lines of the space are super slick.  They decorated the space in a minimalist geometric style that worked perfectly with the clean lines of the venue.

Though the museum is awesome itself for photos, there is also University of Toronto’s Victoria College courtyard right beside it – a lovely historic site with beautiful architecture with old world character. Neat to be able to get two very different looks so close together.

Here are a few words about the wedding from Ali & Marijan themselves:

  • What is your wedding theme / style / colour palette? Why did you choose this? Geometric, minimalist, modern, concrete, gold
  • Venue: What made this venue the one for you? Intimate, modern, and bright setting! Right in the heart of downtown Toronto.
  • Photographer: How did you know you had found the right photographer? So personable, friendly, and easy to work with. Anastasia came with high recommendations and made the process so easy.

Modern Airship37 Wedding | Amanda & Markus

December 17, 2016

Airship37 Wedding | Olive Photography Airship37 Wedding Toronto | Olive PhotographyAmanda and Markus’ downtown Toronto wedding day at Distillery District’s Airship37 was first and foremost a day of love – both between the two of them, and amongst everyone who was there.

They had so many relatives who visited them from around the world who, along with everyone else in attendance, had such affection and adoration for this sweet couple. It’s no wonder, they are two of the kindest, most thoughtful people you will ever meet.

Their wedding was also a wonderful reflection who who they are and what means most to them, with tonnes of personal touches. They put so much of themselves into this wedding. For example, Amanda made the candle wedding favours (she runs an exceptional all-natural soy candle company called Woodsmoke & Olive), her and her bridesmaids & family made the pies, cake and treats on their dessert table, her mother did all their bouquets and centrepieces, her maid of honour did all the calligraphy, a friend made the invites and they infused their own personalty and aesthetic throughout all aspects of the day.
It was really amazing to see how people came together to help make this day as personal as it was.

It was very clear that they wanted to have a meaningful celebration with their nearest and dearest infused with their awesome style, which is my kind of wedding! I spoke with them a few times as they got closer to their wedding and learned that their home was sprawling with DIY projects, and I was super excited to see the fruits of their labour. It was just what I expected: cool, relaxed modern vibe infused with timeless elements, and a few quirky details that highlighted their personality. (e.g. A tie clip saying, ‘You’re the Obi Wan for me’ that Amanda gifted to Markus, and a cute cutout of their dog Olive’s face since she couldn’t attend. Though she did make an appearance for their first look!)

Here are a few peeks at their Airship37/downtown Toronto wedding — And check out the bottom of the post for words from the couple themselves!

From Amanda & Markus!

** What is your wedding theme / style / colour palette? Why did you choose this?
We didn’t have a set theme in mind I guess if we had to name it, it would be urban jungle. We loved the look of lots of fresh greenery but wanted a cool relaxed modern/city vibe that fit our style. Colour palette would be greenery (ferns, rosemary and moss) with berry colours – deep plum and maroon, and brown glass that fit with the fall season, with accents of grey, black and white to keep it modern and not too rustic/farmhouse feel.

** What 3 words best describe your wedding?
Style: Modern Urban Jungle ; Vibe: City Backyard Party.

** Favourite wedding moment(s)?
Amanda – There were so many amazing fun moments of the day it’s hard to choose just one. But for me (as cheesy as this may sound) my favourite moments were any time I was with Markus, particularly during our ceremony just before our vows holding hands looking at each other. For no reason that I can explain, I was a nervous wreck the whole morning before the ceremony, tearing up really easily, except once I saw Markus for our first look. I got nervous again right before the ceremony waiting around and was shaking like a leaf before walking down the isle (partly nerves, partly from cold as it was very windy taking photos outside). As soon as I got to Markus and held his hands I felt so calm and all the nerves associated with “all eyes on you” just melted away.
Markus – One favourite moment was our first look, seeing Amanda for the first time that day before the ceremony. Other moments would be Amanda’s brother’s kind words during our ceremony that made me tear up, and conversely my dad’s speech that made everyone in the room crack up.

** Venue: What made this venue the one for you?
We joke that we were lazy when it came to wedding planning as we didn’t hunt around a lot or at all (including my dress) but I think we just knew what we wanted. This was the first venue we saw and we loved it’s industrial vibe, it seemed very us. When we met with the planners there, they were so relaxed and laid back and open to whatever we wanted it was great. They let us bring in our fire pit from our backyard which ended up being amazing since it was such a cool fall night people got to take a breather from the epic dance party and make s’mores and get cozy by the fire. They also had a ping pong table available to us which everyone who wasn’t too into dancing just loved, it was busy all night. Beyond that they were super helpful and the staff were on the ball with everything. I‘ve heard a lot of people say they didn’t get to try the food at their wedding but the head server there made sure we had passed hors d’oeuvres sent to us as well as our specialty cocktail. They were fantastic.

** Photographer: How did you know you had found the right photographer?
We found Anastasia through online wedding blogs. Her company name caught our attention as our dog’s name is Olive, but her photography style is what really attracted us. We knew she was the right photographer after we met with her. Anastasia is just the most kind-hearted, down-to-earth and genuine person you will ever meet. I think in any sales related industry you can meet a lot of people that are fake nice. Anastasia is not one of those people. She is so dedicated to making you feel relaxed and comfortable and you can tell she truly loves what she does. We both are not comfortable having a lot of attention on us and being photographed, but during our engagement session with her all that went away. She really has a way of making you feel at ease and comfortable. We walked away feeling like we had just spent the day hanging out with an old friend. On our wedding day it was so great to have her calming presence around but she was also so professional. She was able to guide everyone through photos efficiently keeping us on time and was practically invisible during the ceremony & reception getting photos of everything like a photog-ninja!

** Any words of advice for couples planning their wedding?
We had a lot of DIY items at our wedding. It can definitely help to save money in some areas but it takes a lot of time so be prepared to do a lot of work in advance if you undertake DIY projects. We were so fortunate to have amazingly talented friends and family to help out. One of my MOHs Sarah does calligraphy and worked her calligraphy magic on everything – the envelope addressing, signs at our wedding, seating chart & place cards – she was so generous with her time. Another friend designed the invites and some signs we had outside our venue, and our mothers did all the bouquet’s, corsages, flowers on the table and even nursed some ferns & rosemary plants for two months. We were truly blessed to have all this help. We did a lot of stuff ourselves too and with that, our first piece of advice is know when to let things go. As it got closer to our wedding day there were things we had planned on doing that we just had to decide that it wasn’t a big enough impact on the day and to just let it go. Pinterest & wedding blogs are great inspiration but at some point you have to just stop looking at them or you just keep adding to your pile of DIY tasks. Another key piece of advice is to stick to things that will really be memorable. No one is going to notice or care what colour napkins you use but they will care about the food, or remember that hanging greenery that really makes a visual impact. A final piece of advice is that if you don’t have a wedding planner (we didn’t) have a day of coordinator or a friend who you trust to coordinate for you. We were INCREDIBLY lucky again to have a friend who does event planning & coordination who spent so much time helping to set everything up and execute our vision of our wedding day. It took a lot of stress out of the day having someone we could rely on to set everything up and make sure the day ran smoothly.

** Anything else you’d like to share?
Amanda: Everyone always talks about how their wedding day is the best day of their life. As we got closer to our wedding day and the stress started to build I really kept thinking maybe we should have eloped and saved us money and stress. However after going through it, I totally understand it now. I’ve never before been surrounded by so much love and support. The love and support our family & friends showed us by donating their time and talents which I will forever be grateful for, and just the happiness everyone showed us on that day was SO worth it. It was just magical. It was the most fun day and I’m still feeling all warm and fuzzy about it. And while I’m sure we will have many amazing days in our life together, this will be one that stands out that I will never forget.

Kurtz Orchards Wedding Photos | Randy + Jovy

December 10, 2016

Kurtz Orchards Wedding | Olive Photography Toronto Kurtz Orchards Wedding | Olive Photography Toronto

Randy and Jovy’s Niagara Vineyard Wedding at Kurtz Orchards was a day full of heart.
You could feel the sweet love these two share, as well as so much warmth in the love of their family and friends.
This was especially evident during speeches, when tears were flowing anywhere you looked. So touching.
Kurtz Orchards is such a scenic place for wedding photography – Not only is there the beauty of the vineyard (vineyard weddings are so lovely as it is!), but they have a historic house for getting ready, an orchard for an outdoor ceremony, a tent for an outdoor reception (yay, natural light!), and the most AMAZING sunset on their horizon! The warm fiery glow was absolutely perfect for some magical sunset shots.

– THEIR LOVE STORY –

From Daniel:
One day five years ago, I was walking into a work meeting, when a colleague of mine stopped to ask me a question. He casually mentioned that the daughter of their neighbor was in town for the summer and was looking to meet people her own age. He wanted to know if I was interested in meeting her.
At this point, the boardroom was filling up with people and my colleague kept going on and on how this girl is really sweet and cute and that I need to meet her. I politely asked if we could continue the conversation after the meeting, but by then several other people had overheard and started egging me on to get her number.
I succumbed to the peer pressure and got her number. Shortly after, we connected and I had invited her to my house for a birthday BBQ. This fearless American woman travelled by public transit on her own from Oakville into a city she barely knew to meet a guy she didn’t know.
Either she was extremely bored; or it was fate, regardless I was hooked. After a few years of long distance, she graduated and decided to move to Toronto for me, that’s when I knew she was the one.

After be together for so long, we both knew it was time to get engaged; however I wasn’t going to give in so easily. When we booked our trip to Italy, I made it perfectly clear that it was NOT going to happen, as I didn’t want her thinking about it the entire trip. At the same time, I knew I was going to propose, but I had to ensure it would be a surprise.
I had it all planned out; as I wanted to propose on the Piazza de Michelangelo, which I read had a great view and sunset. However, I had no idea there would be several hundred people also in the plaza. This was not a spectacle I wanted to share with hundreds of strangers. Sure enough I didn’t have to, as another future bride was proposed to just a few meters away.
Since I wasn’t going to be the second guy to do it that evening, I decided to wait until the following morning. I woke up early and got everything ready. As we did every day, we recapped what we were going to see that day.
As I finished the recap, I quickly said “change of plans!” and got down on one knee and proposed. I would like to say it was a magical speech that completely captured my love for Courtney; however, I am pretty sure I blacked out and forget everything I said and did.
All I remembered was she said YES. We ended up buying matching wedding bands on the Ponte Vecchio (which was my plan from the start). And now we are here… cool story right?

From Courtney:
Dan and I met 5 and a half years ago on somewhat of a blind date. I lived in Nevada, but was home for the summer with my parents who had recently moved to the GTA. My Mom and Dad lived down the street from a colleague of Dan’s, who thought we would hit it off.
After exchanging some emails back and forth, Dan invited me to his house for a birthday barbecue with his friends. I left thinking we might be friends, and that we might hang out again… maybe? I like to think Dan left knowing we would be here someday:). Somehow I couldn’t shake him off after that, and I found myself packing up my life after graduation and moving to Toronto to be with him.

We reached a point where I knew we would be getting engaged someday, I just didn’t know when. So when we booked a trip to Italy in April, I thought… “Maybe?”. Dan was quick to shut me down, he told everyone not to worry, that a vacation proposal was too obvious and there was no way we would be coming home engaged. When we got to Italy, love was all around us.
By our third day we had seen 3 proposals, and assumed I would not be next. I was in shock when Dan got down on one knee early one morning in Florence and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. I actually said “is this real life?”. We spent the day walking around the city and bought our wedding bands along the famous Ponte Vecchio. Now we get to come home and start our lives together!

Geometric Wedding / Candlelit Elopement Wedding Inspiration

There was a full moon that day, and so the moon was a welcome addition to the photos!
The style of this shoot incorporates traditional opulent elegance mingled with clean geometric lines and shapes.
Elegant, but not ‘too much’. Modern, but still soft. A harmonious balance between the two usually quite opposite styles.
The floral arrangements are relaxed and organic, which juxtaposes nicely with the ornate antique details in the tablescape.
We also think it’s important to not upstage the beauty of the venue too much – important to find a good complimentary balance.

We hope this shoot inspires the romantic, traditionally-inclined yet relaxed couple!

A bit more info about the thought process behind this styled shoot:

We wanted to capture an intimate elopement that upholds traditional elegant opulence and at the same time infuses some fun and whimsy – all while keeping things minimal and timeless.
The soft muted pink & green palate with touches of deep berry and warm candlelight includes a mix of vintage and modern accents. We juxtaposed metallic finishes and geometric shapes with organically styled blooms and the natural beauty of this apple orchard. (Which also serves as a super fun place to visit for a date in the Fall! Mmm, I’m smelling the apple pies already…)
To cap things off perfectly, the full moon made a surprise appearance as the sun set for the ultimate romantic setting for a candlelit dusk reception!

P.S. We adoooore the groom’s beard. We thought it deserved an honourable mention.

Toronto Green Wedding Shoes
Boho-Glam Wedding Inspiration Shoot — What a super fun shoot to capture! This was also featured on Green Wedding Shoes!
Here’s a bit about the concept, as written by planner extraordinaire Annie of Madison & Ella:

“This elopement styled shoot was inspired by the dreamy California landscape and the free spirited bohemian aesthetic that comes out of there.

Annie of Madison & Ella Inc. styled the shoot with the warm, rich golden colours of the sun and sand in mind creating an intimate ceremony and tablescape for two. Carrie of Roadside Florist perfectly accented the design with desert foliage in muted greens and browns adding feathers for the perfect bohemian touch. She planted large palm leaves around the beach to help turn a Toronto patch of sand into a California desert. All of which captured beautifully by Anastasia Giaouris of Olive Photography.

The bride wore dresses from Toronto’s quintessential bohemian bridal store, Loversland. The first is a refined, minimal dress from designer & For Love and the second is a relaxed, hippie crochet fringe dress by Rue de Seine. She was adorned with hand made rings from local Toronto artist, Anat Kaplan of Anouk Jewelry and other unique jewellery, like her tiered head piece and gold fringe necklace from Anice Jewellery.

Finding a place in Toronto that we could turn into the California coast was no easy task but the trek to this spot at the Scarborough Bluffs was well worth it to bring our elopement story to life.”

The story board goes something like this:
Here are two wildly in love people who wanted to be married on the beach, just the two of them celebrating their love under the sun. So they jumped in their Volkswagen Mini Bus and drove to the coast and got hitched under a teepee with their vows printed on canvas and adorned with macrame accents.
After which a personal chef created them to the most fabulous meal for two on the beach brought to life by Chef Lauren Mozer of Elle Cuisine.

Relaxed Toronto Engagement Photos – Carolyn & Nick

August 3, 2016

relaxed Toronto engagement photos relaxed Toronto engagement photosMy evening with Carolyn & Nick left me feeling so zen and heart-full.
This session was so relaxed, free-flowing and easy-going.
We explored their neighbourhood (King West) and snapped some shots when the light and locations felt right.
I had such a great time hanging out with these two and documenting this time in their lives.
Can’t wait for their George restaurant wedding next May <3

— & Here’s their fantastic engagement story!
“The Proposal

I surprised Nick with a trip to Cape Breton for his 30th birthday. We had planned to drive the Cabot Trail and hike around the provincial park. I had read online how beautiful the Skyline Trail Hike was, but we were both a little nervous because a hiker had been killed there by a coyote a few years back.

As we walked the trail, every crunch in the bush made us turn in fear. Also, the temporary sign that read ‘Coyote in the Area’ didn’t help to calm our nerves. I kept asking Nick if we should turn back and forget about the rest of the trail, but he seemed keen to push on.
After about an hour of walking with anxiety, we finally reached the beautiful lookout that made it all worth it. We cracked a beer and started taking pictures. Because it was the low season in Cape Breton, we ended up at the lookout by ourselves. I turned around to see Nick down on one knee. In shear disbelief, I ran around in a circle and didn’t let him talk – but I did say yes! It was the perfect moment.
Hiking from the lookout point back to the car I was no longer afraid. I remember telling Nick that I had enough excited energy to fight any coyote that crossed our path!”
