Hotel X Wedding | Caroline & JP

June 5, 2020

Hotel X Wedding | Olive Photography Toronto
Hotel X Wedding | Caroline & JP

Sometimes grandmas know best. Yes, Caroline & JP were set up by their grandmothers!

“We were set up by our grandmothers…
I was living and teaching in Vancouver, and came home for a long weekend in November 2014 and went with my grandmother to her church bizarre. JP’s grandmother was there and she asked me if I was single and when I said yes, she said I had to meet her grandson and went on about how special he is. Since I was going back to Vancouver that weekend, it didn’t end up working out for JP and I to meet up until I came home for March Break (March 2015). We met at Starbucks for a coffee and hit it off! We continued texted while I was back in Vancouver, and I moved home in July 2015 and that’s when we started dating. Our grandmothers have known each other since they were young girls, and they are so happy everything has worked out.”

Caroline and JP had such a stunning wedding at Hotel X down by Toronto’s waterfront.
The location has gorgeous natural light from their large windows, and the views of the city and water are vast and quite possibly unmatched!

Here is why they chose Hotel X as their wedding venue:
“We wanted to get married somewhere close to home and after looking at a few other nearby venues, we had a few people recommend checking out Hotel X. It’s about a 7 minute drive from where we live, and when we arrived to see it for the first time, we were stunned by how big, beautiful and brand new it is. We fell in love with the view from the 28th floor (where our ceremony will take place) and loved that the ceremony space also met our criteria of having outdoor space. For me, seeing the Bride’s suite and Groom’s Room which are on the third floor (same as our ballroom) really sealed the deal for me because then I was able to picture myself getting ready in these rooms, getting married on the 28th floor, and celebrating with everyone in the ballroom.”

I had the pleasure of meeting Caroline when she was a bridesmaid for another amazing couple whose wedding I photographed.
When she reached out asking if I’d photograph her wedding I was elated! Caroline is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet! I was honoured to capture these special memories for her and JP.
When I asked why she chose me as her photographer, this is what she said:
“When I met you when I was a bridesmaid for Bridget Benn, I knew that I wanted to use you if you were available when it was my turn! I had so much fun running around the Distillery taking photos in the freezing cold that day with you, and I LOVED Bridget’s engagement and wedding photos. Looking forward to spending my special day with you!”

The day was absolutely breathtaking, start to finish.
Take a look at that stunning floral arch!!

From the couple about their wedding theme: Modern, Elegant, Romantic
“Our wedding theme is modern and elegant. Part of the reason we went with this is because our venue, Hotel X, is such a modern setting. We loved Hotel X for it’s proximity to our home and to Lake Ontario. We’re excited about the fact it’s a new hotel and will be new for many of our guests to see. The main colour in my colour palette is blush, which will be reflected in the florals and the bridesmaids dresses. For a summer wedding, I wanted something light and also I want the flowers to help soften the modern design of the hotel a bit, for a little bit of a romantic feel.”

Words of advice from the newlyweds?
“Find time to relax and unwind together where you can take a break from talking and thinking about wedding planning.”

Sunnyside Pavillion Toronto Waterfront Proposal | Artin & Arpi

June 2, 2020

Sunnyside Pavillion Toronto Waterfront Proposal | Artin & Arpi

Toronto waterfront proposal photography | Sunnyside Pavillion engagement photos | Olive Photography Toronto Toronto waterfront proposal photography | Sunnyside Pavillion engagement photos | Olive Photography Toronto
Artin called me knowing he wanted to propose to Arpi, but he wasn’t sure how yet.
He knew he wanted to include a message in a bottle with a special note, but he wasn’t sure how.
He knew he wanted to involve water, but Arpi was afraid of going on a boat.
He wanted the location to be special, but secluded.
So, I suggested Sunnyside Pavillion and it was a hit!

Sunnyside Pavillion is down on Toronto’s waterfront. It’s right beside the lake, with a beach and boardwalk. Thing is, it’s quite busy there! But, there’s a gooorgeous courtyard inside Sunnyside Pavillion cafe that many people don’t know about! In fact, if you visit the cafe and venture into the courtyard, chances are it’ll be pretty much deserted in there. It’s absolutely a hidden gem.
And it has this amazing Spanish villa look to it. How unique!

After Artin checked out some images of the spot online, he agreed it would be a great spot for his surprise proposal, and now we had to decide how it would happen.
We devised a plan: They would go out for dinner, and after dinner they would go for a little stroll, exploring and finding themselves in the courtyard. During their stroll Arpi would notice a message in a bottle, and Artin would tell her she should try to open it. And inside would be the love note, and once she was done reading he would be down on one knee. How fun!

One little dilemma: How would the bottle get there?? Where exactly would it be?
So we met up on a day before their proposal date to go over the location options, where I would hide, timing, and he gave me the bottle to bring with me and place on the actual day.

As you can see in the photos it went off without a hitch… and now these two are getting hitched!

Hotel X Toronto Proposal | Neysha & Lucky

June 2, 2020

Hotel X Toronto Proposal | Toronto Proposal Ideas | Olive Photography TorontoHotel X Toronto Proposal | Toronto Proposal Ideas | Neysha & Lucky

Lucky wanted to bring tropical vibes to his Toronto proposal for the love of his life Neysha.
He also wanted to incorporate Toronto somehow, while also being weather proof.
He enlisted the help of Toronto wedding planner Carmen Luk of Devoted to You, and they decided Hotel X was the perfect location for the occasion since it has a rentable private multi-purpose room that has a gorgeous Toronto skyline view!
The room is tucked away behind a restaurant – totally unexpected and private. (Could even be rented for private dinners with the stunning view! How cool is that??)

Together with the help of Denovo Floral they put together a jaw-dropping scene that surprised Neysha when she thought she was going to a simple dinner that evening. The decor featured a unique swing centrepiece where the ring awaited Neysha as she walked into the room, and following the Big Question a little decorated table with bubbly awaited them to celebrate. So many thoughtful touches!

Lucky went the extra mile and even arranged to have some of Neysha’s closest local loved ones be there as part of the occasion. The emotions on their face were priceless – from giddiness and glee to emotional tears, I loved every moment of photographing this special time!

Hotel X was such a perfect location for this proposal! It has it all: an unobstructed skyline view, even more views of Toronto’s waterfront, gorgeous light from the floor to ceiling windows, interesting spots for photos at the hotel, AND a park with green space and waterfront just across the street for more portraits for after the proposal.

It was so much fun to be a part of this special occasion!
All the best to these lovebirds in their life together!!

I’ve always wanted to photograph a Kortright Centre for Conservation wedding. The forest of tall, skinny trees is so darned majestic!! I distinctly remember saying out loud how happy I was – that I loved it there so much! The vibe of a forest wedding is so relaxed. The sounds of the birds singing and wind blowing, rustling leaves, is enough to give me goosebumps.
But add into that a couple like these two… *sigh* … You can see what I mean from just their smiles and how they look at each other. There is a big, beautiful love shared between them. They may love so big in part due to their families – you could really feel the warmth and support from everyone who was in attendance that day.
They had a Kortright Centre Ceremony and a King’s Riding Golf Club Reception – some highlights below (it was hard to narrow down!)

And some words from the couple themselves, written before they said ‘I Do!’:

Tell us about your love story!
Erik and I met at York Muay Thai, 7 and a half years ago. At the time I was a receptionist and Erik was a member of the gym. I was not supposed to date anyone, to keep things formal and professional, but that went out the window when I saw Erik enter the gym. Erik knew of my instant attraction but played it cool for a few weeks. He finally asked me out and we’ve been together since. Turns out he returned to York University after finishing his B.A to look for a wife. Mission accomplished. Regarding the proposal, Erik proposed at his cottage, a place that we both love and where we’ve had many happy memories and conversations regarding our future.

What is your wedding theme / style / colour palette? Why did you choose this?
Our wedding will have a lot of white, green, pink, with gold accents. The colour palette/design for our centerpieces evolved from these gold candle pillars from Michaels that I really love. I also think less is more, so instead of a big flower arrangement with these already beautiful pillars, we’ve decided on mini vases and delicate flowers. Our wedding theme is chic, minimal, classic and unapologetic. Every detail for the wedding has been personally decided by us and our likes.

What 3-5 words best describe your wedding?
Family, Nature, Delicate, Negronis, Dancing and very us/me.

What have you been looking forward to most about your wedding day?
I look forward to our first look at the ceremony, seeing my vision come to life and dancing the night away.

Venue: What made this venue the one for you?
For the ceremony, it was super important for us to be married in a forest. Being in nature and our love for nature means so much to us individually but it is also something we enjoy as a couple as well. For the reception, I really wanted an outdoor venue but because of unknown weather conditions, it was best to find a venue that was indoors but still had an outdoor feel. The cocktail hour is on a balcony.

Photographer: How did you know you had found the right photographer?
Your positive aura over the phone sold me right away. It was just an added bonus that Erik’s cousin Jesse Korgemaa referred us to you and that my brother recognized you from middle school.

Any words of advice for couples planning their wedding?
This may be cliche but I think it is really important to know your intentions before you plan your big day. For example, are you planning a party to please others or are you planning a party because you want to celebrate a special moment in your life with the man/women you love, or is it both? When Erik and I decided on a big(ish) party, our intention was to have fun and to create something that was personal to us, therefore, when I found my self worrying about what others expected or wanted to see instead of asking what we wanted and loved, Erik asked me the question above and it’s helped me to enjoy the journey and to not sway off that path. Therefore, live in the present, be grateful, remember its YOUR day/party, do what you want (but set a realistic budget)and don’t be apologetic about it.

Toronto City Hall Wedding Photos | Tasia & Josh

Toronto City Hall Wedding Photos | Tasia & Josh

I heard a really great quote the other day: “When everything is uncertain, everything that is important becomes clear”.

Tasia & Josh had a very intimate wedding with their nearest and dearest.
They chose to get ready together. It meant they could share those moments of stomach flutters, bursts of joy, and burning love glances.
Throw in a few fun jokes and lowered stress due to not worrying about timeline as much, and it worked really beautifully.

They still chose to get dressed in separate spaces and shared a mini first look as well. It was so nice.

They met up with family downtown and took some Toronto City Hall wedding photos with just the two of them and their immediate family groups.
Then we walked over to where their commitment ceremony and reception were taking place: Leña Restaurant. Low key, with the focus on what matters: their connection and commitment to one another.

Though their ceremony actually happened at Leña, I decided to name this post ‘Toronto City Hall Wedding Photos’ because a lot of the beautiful images did come from the city hall portion of the day. Also, with what’s going on in the world with COVID-19/the coronavirus, I have a feeling a lot of people will start having smaller celebrations; so I wanted to share this for those people who are considering having a small event like these two did.
I have a feeling there will be a lot more city hall weddings, and I wanted to share some inspiration for those considering it.

Currently we are being told to stay away from people we don’t live with, and to postpone events we have planned. We don’t know when gatherings of large groups will be allowed again, but I imagine people will still want to get married – so how do they do that? And what will my role as a wedding photographer be?

Time will tell how things will go, and what we are able to do in the world of weddings in the next little while.
But at the end of the day, what’s important is your love. I can’t wait to start documenting special days for people again – whenever and however is safe.

Be well, friends.

Much love to all of you <3

Ontario Barn Wedding

Emily and Nick had the MOST beautiful Ontario barn wedding in the Autumn – the leaves were all sorts of stunning colours and the sun peeked through in the most sparkly ways.
And of course, the people were my favourite. These two have such open and full hearts, as do their families – just look at all the amazing ‘heart on their sleeves’ expressions! *sigh* such big love.

Here are a few highlights from their day, along with some words from the couple themselves!

What is your wedding theme / style / colour palette? Why did you choose this?
Romance meets whimsical. The colours for our wedding are burgundy, black, white and golds. We had chosen this look because it suites us as a couple. Throughout the venue you will see lots of soft lights and pumpkins . We had choose this because fall is an important season for us. We started dating in October, got engaged in October and soon to be married in October ! We wanted to incorporate fall into our day but being surrounded by warmth of the lights and candles.

What 3-5 words best describe your wedding?
Good food, drinks , music and love !

What have you been looking forward to most about your wedding day?
We both can not wait to be officially husband and wife ! Getting to start our new chapter in the presence of our closest family and friends ! It will for sure be a party !

Venue: What made this venue the one for you?
We both come from European backgrounds and wanted to do something non-traditional . As well, the barn is a significant symbol in our lives. Nick and I had our first date at Sunnybrooke Farms and continued to make a tradition by visiting a farm annually . Nick had proposed at Springridge farms . So , when we had came across a barn venue — we thought what could be more perfect !

Photographer: How did you know you had found the right photographer?
We both knew we had to have Anastasia as our photographer because not only did we love her work, but her as well! Our first initial meeting with Anastasia felt like we were talking with one of our friends because she made us feel comfortable and took her time going over any questions or details we had asked .

Any words of advice for couples planning their wedding?
Enjoy every moment in wedding plans! Most importantly don’t forget who you are as a couple. Focus on each other and do what you both would want in your special day together !

Trillium Park Engagement Photos | Chantelle & Roberto

Trillium Park Engagement Photos | Chantelle & Roberto

“Roberto and I met on a cold January 14th 2017 night at The Drake. Roberto spotted me immediately and strategically placed himself close enough to eventually strike up a conversation. I noticed the intensity and gentleness in his eyes and of course, his bow tie, while he noticed my smile and “the most beautiful face.” Once we mustered up the courage to start talking, we spent the night talking about music therapy and bonding over a mutual love of The Phantom of the Opera, Beethoven, and Boyz II Men. It took only until the next weekend to know that we wanted to spend our lives together.

Roberto and I are homebodies who enjoy a night in at our Liberty Village condo or visiting with family. Once in a while we will have a date night out for some hearty Italian food. Roberto is a sensitive engineer who loves writing poetry, making folk music, mens fashion, and playing hockey. I am a music therapist, special needs music teacher, and PhD student who enjoys walks around the city, classical music, and a good Americano.”

“…to say the least, I am a huge fan of your photography. I was first drawn to your work because of the beautiful way you capture the light of the sunset. I almost felt as though it was the love between your clients radiating from them. As I began to see more and more of your pictures, regardless of the setting, I could always feel the love radiating. My boyfriend Roberto and I knew that when we decided to marry, we wanted you to be the one to capture our love radiating in engagement and wedding photos. ”

^ Those words were from Chantelle in her initial email to me, and I nearly jumped out of my seat with excitement to meet them!

Before heading over to Trillium Park we spent some time at their condo enjoying espresso and delicious Nutella bombi from Sud Forno. Mmmm. They also shared a moment on the balcony where they had their first kiss. What an honour to witness and document such a nostalgic and momentous part of their love story.

I can’t articulate the sweetness between these two. I could see it immediately. The way they look at each other is just so *full*, and warm. Like being in each other’s presence is peaceful and invigorating at the same time.

After their session we had drinks at the Drake Hotel where they first met. I was brought to tears when Roberto talked about how he feels about Chantelle, and he himself started to tear up. Seriously, the stuff of movies.

Funny story, Chantelle realized after they’d been seeing and enjoying my photos online that we actually went to elementary school together, and even had strings lessons together! What a small world.

I didn’t want to leave that evening, and these two will always have a special place in my heart <3

District 28 Wedding | Caslon & Nick

January 9, 2020

District 28 Wedding: Caslon & Nick

District 28 is one of those ultra cool artistic loft/studio kind of spaces.
The District 28 studio spaces are literally blank canvases – not just because they are white… you can actually transform/paint the space for every event!
Where else can you find a venue that will literally let you paint the walls how you want?

Caslon and Nick opted to stick with the clean white that already comes standard with the space and decorate it with whimsical, lush, crawling greenery expertly set up by florist Rikki Marcone.

They added rustic wood harvest tables draped with soft fabric table runners and sprinkled with relaxed florals and industrial modern table numbers, as well as hand calligraphed place cards and marble cookie favours. Nick made the cake topper out of copper wire that tied in with the copper pipe table number accents and arch used at the ceremony, then repurposed as the head table backdrop. All of this executed by The Event Design Co.

The vibe of their wedding’s style stuck a perfect balance between cool and classy. Not just the decor, but the couple themselves too!

They both shed tears during the exchanging of vows, as did some people in the crowd – I love that so much. Not only do they love each other, but you could feel the love amongst everyone in the room. They have cultivated a beautiful crew of supportive peeps.

Here’s a glance at Caslon & Nick’s District 28 wedding!

Now from the couple!

Tell us about your love story! How you met and/or how you got engaged! (If you have shared this with me before you can just copy that text here.)CCa
How did ‘we’ meet? We met in grade 9 English class and the rest, well it’s a long story. The engagement is a little shorter. We were getting ready to celebrate our 10-year anniversary with a trip to Spain. Caslon joked that if Nick wanted to see the 11th anniversary he better take her to Spain. Nick did her one better- he proposed just before they headed to the airport! Even though it was 10 years in the making, she never saw it coming! The next two weeks were filled with romance, tapas, and Damm Lemons.

What is your wedding theme / style / colour palette? Why did you choose this?
Modern Greenhouse with romantic accents. We wanted an outdoor wedding but couldn’t stand the idea of getting rained out so we brought the outside in! We chose green with accents of dusty pastels and gold/copper to weave in a romantic feel.

What have you been looking forward to most about your wedding day?
The ceremony- it was 13 years in the making and after so much time together we were just excited to express what and how much we mean to each other in front of all the people we love. After so much anticipation, it did not disappoint! It was truly one of the most beautiful moments of our lives– ugly crying and all!

Venue: What made this venue the one for you?
District 28 was perfect for us in so many ways.
The Riverside location– we grew up in the Eastend and wanted to get married where it all began. Plus it was easily accessible for Westenders & out-of-towners.

The industrial & modern aesthetic– The industrial loft space was modernized with white walls that really acted as the perfect blank canvas for us to create our modern greenhouse. Not to mention how nicely all that greenery popped against the white.

One & done– We loved the idea of being able to have the ceremony in a separate space than the reception while staying within the same venue! It really helped to separate the evening without adding any extra stress to us, our guests or our vendors.

The Staff: We loved our Venue Coordinator, Diana! She made it such an enjoyable process (and it was a long one– we signed almost 2 years out!) The chef and venue staff were top notch and the videographer was such a pleasure to work with. Everyone really made us feel special & comfortable throughout the planning process and on the big day.

Photographer: How did you know you had found the right photographer?
Olive Photography (Anastasia) had done our friend’s wedding and not only did we LOVE the photos, but we loved her energy! She felt less like a photographer than an old friend, which made engagement photos and photos on the big day so much more natural. It was one of the easiest decisions we made throughout the planning process.

Any words of advice for couples planning their wedding?
B R E A T H E. It helps to hire a planner/day-of coordinator so that you can take a step back and enjoy the ride!

Casa Loma Wedding | Cassie & Phil

January 4, 2020

Casa Loma Wedding Photos | Olive Photography Toronto Casa Loma Wedding Photos | Olive Photography Toronto
Cassie and Phil had an elegant Casa Loma wedding. I mean, how can your wedding not be elegant if it’s located in a legitimate CASTLE?

One of Toronto’s most unique and iconic sites, Casa Loma is a beautiful wedding venue. Not just because of the gorgeous architecture and wood detailing, but also because of their stunning gardens and plethora of wedding portrait locations! We didn’t have to leave the grounds since there were so many fantastic options. This meant Cassie and Phil could maximize the time spent with their loved ones, which is such a great thing to consider when planning your wedding day. Having a first look and portraits at the start of the day also meant that after the ceremony they could enjoy the cocktail hour – and the delicious oysters – with their guests!

They had a traditional Chinese tea ceremony at Cassie’s parents’ home before the western portion of the wedding, which was a nice way to kick off the day with their closest family.

After, they had a beautiful, emotional ceremony in Casa Loma’s Greenhouse, and then the reception in the stunning, romantic library. The party portion of the night was kicked off with a surprise choreographed first dance from the couple (adorable!) and a LIMBO! Yessss – so much fun!

And the day was pulled off so smoothly and beautifully with the help of wedding planner Valary from Vivid & Vogue Events! She also styled some epic lay flats of Cassie’s bridal details in the morning. What an eye she has!

Enjoy some images from Cassie & Phil’s special day below!

The Doctor’s House Wedding | Megan & Aaron

March 28, 2019

The Doctor's House Wedding| Olive Photography Toronto

When two of the sweetest people ask you if you’ll photograph their wedding day, you say yes!

You might remember these two from their at-home & neighbourhood engagement session – it’s been so great spending time with them!
Megan & Aaron’s special day was held in Kleinberg at the Doctor’s House.
A Doctor’s House wedding is quite unique to other wedding venues offered in Toronto/the GTA. There’s a fairytale quality to the picturesque grounds – a long, lush, landscaped garden, a quaint wood chapel lit purely with candlelight, a cobblestone courtyard cocktail hour area… and the reception space is lovely too – updated with lots of natural light coming through the large windows.

Needless to say I was excited to photograph this day!

You may remember these two from their at-home engagement session!
Their wedding was timeless and romantic with a perfectly balanced mix of traditional elegance and chic boho flair.

Some fun highlights to watch out for:
– The most epic bouquet toss catch
– A sweet father moment peeking at his daughter as a bride
– Kids being adorable
– Tonnes of full-on heart happy smiles & laughs

Flawless planning & coordination by Designed Dream, stunning flowers (as always) by Quill & Oak.

Here are some photos from the day! (It was so hard cutting out so many great moments to fit into this post, but I’m always happy to share a full gallery if anyone asks! Just email me! info@olivephotography.ca)
Be sure to catch more from the couple themselves at the bottom of the post!!

Here are some thoughts from the couple that were written as they anticipated their day:

What is your wedding theme / style / colour palette? Why did you choose this?
Boho chic, lots of floral / greenery, rose taupe. We chose this because we wanted to break from the traditional wedding style – so not us.

What words best describe your wedding?
modern, romantic

What have you been looking forward to most about your wedding day?
Walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing Aaron’s reaction (I think he’s going to cry; he doesn’t haha) (Update: He did!)
Venue: What made this venue the one for you?
We wanted something that didn’t have the look and feel of a traditional wedding hall, but would accommodate our guest count.

Photographer: How did you know you had found the right photographer?
You’re brilliant at what you do and so down to earth. Once we saw our friend’s wedding photos that you took, we knew we wanted to talk to you. But once we met you, we knew you’d be our girl!

Any words of advice for couples planning their wedding?
Enjoy every moment of the planning process, regardless of how stressful it might be. The time you spend planning for your wedding is just as special as the big day itself.
