Canoe Restaurant Wedding – Catherine & Alex

November 2, 2015

downtown Toronto wedding

Canoe Restaurant Wedding

They got married atop the city.
Canoe Restaurant sits on the 54th floor of Toronto’s TD Bank Tower, above the city’s tallest skyscrapers, with a sunset view that is out of this world.

We circled the neighbourhood and found romance amidst the bustling streets and office buildings, pausing to document photography their portraits in some of the city’s unique and interesting backdrops. Some of this included graffiti, church parks and even some metal cow sculptures – we embraced where we were and really relished how different their wedding photos would look.

Their wedding ceremony took place in a room adjacent to the main dining room with a unique layout – they stood in the middle with their loved ones seated in rows on both ends of the space. This way everyone could be closer – and the idea of being surrounded by loved ones during such a momentous time is lovely.

Their ring bearer stole my heart – a doe-eyed sweetheart in a mini-man suit and flower crown. Yes, he wore a flower crown, and it was adorable!

This wedding also included some special personal touches including custom illustrated invitations with them and their pug Frank (who also joined us that day!), ‘party animal’ figurine place cards, a cake topper that Catherine’s grandparents used for their wedding, and candles Alex lit just before dinner to honour his parents who are with us in spirit.

Here are some highlights from their special day.

Words from the newlyweds themselves and more info about their wedding are at the bottom of the post.

And now, here are some words from the newlyweds themselves:

* What was the style/vibe of your wedding, and why did you choose to make it that way?
We wanted our wedding to feel urban, and reflect how much we love living in Toronto. The end feeling that we wanted to create was a fun dinner party for our guests.

 * What did you love most about your venue?
Everything! The space is beautiful on its own, so we didn’t have to do much to decorate.  The view is spectacular. We loved having the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception all in one place. And we loved that our venue is a restaurant, so the focus was on the delicious food.

* What was your favourite wedding moment (bride & groom)
We had a lot of favourite moments during the day, but a few stand out:
Catherine: I loved seeing Alex for the first time. I also love how Alex surprised me towards the end of the night by including a touching and hilarious anecdote in our thank you speech to wrap up a joke that we’ve shared since our first date.
Alex: I’ll never forget watching Catherine walk down the aisle at our ceremony.

* Any advice for engaged couples planning their wedding?
Enjoy every moment because the whole process is fun, exciting, and goes by quickly. Make sure that you have a least one person you can rely on to troubleshoot and keep things moving on the day of your wedding, and make a really good detailed itinerary.

* Any final thoughts about the big day/experience of getting married that you’d like to share?
We relied a lot on help from our amazing friends and family. It was a true labour of love to turn our ideas into a beautiful day.

Berkeley Church Wedding – Nikki & Andrew

July 24, 2015

Nikki & Andrew's Berkeley Church Wedding in downtown Toronto - Olive Photography

Berkeley Church wedding photos are pretty unique – This venue is an old church converted into a super interesting place to hold a wedding!
There’s an upper-level balcony for the ceremony that overlooks the reception area. Different than any place I’d ever seen before with mezzanine seating and twinkle lights strung along the open view downstairs. And stained glass windows let in warm, glowing sunshine. A very cool spot.

You may remember these two from their super sweet engagement session at University of Guelph, where they first met.

These two are super fun, free-spirited people who are a blast to hang around with and photograph.
Not only are they completely *beeyoootiful* people, but their charisma and positive attitude makes my job of capturing life-filled moments such a breeze. These two have such a zest for life and are always laughing. Loved that!

The girls got ready at Trump Hotel, and before heading to the ceremony I snuck Nikki away for some quick bride shots in the buslting downtown. It was a challenge at first since it was so busy, but we quickly embraced the lively vibe and got some really special photographs with such movement – I love how they turned out! Sometimes a situation isn’t ideal, but if you roll with the punches something pretty unique and interesting can come about. These may just be my fave bridal portraits I’ve ever taken so far. I just love candid wedding photography.

Anyhow – before I ramble on too much, here are some of my faves from Nikki & Andrew’s relaxed and fun Berkeley Church wedding.

Congratulations again, cutie pies!

With so much love,
Anastasia

Rosewater Room Wedding

May 18, 2015

Toronto Wedding Photographer Olive Photography_0371Toronto Wedding Photographer Olive Photography_0365

Susan and Ike had a Rosewater Room wedding in downtown Toronto – I love a full-on city wedding – lots of fun and totally interesting locations for photos!

Susan and Ike have a love that is without pretension, is youthful and jovial, joyful and free – They care about each other with a confident and beautiful abandon – two individual souls who can exist and support one another in the most admiring way.I was really touched watching how magnetically drawn to each other they are, seeming completely elated to be in each other’s arms, yet also how totally happy they are watching each other enjoy themselves in the crowd of loved ones from afar – What I’m trying to say is, this couple has a bond that goes deep, and it was an honour to photograph their wedding at Rosewater on Saturday.

Their speeches included words to each other that had this photographer teary-eyed and completely smitten being in the presence of this amazing love. The love was also echoed all around by every single one of their guests who was so impassionately excited to be there. Susan and Ike’s crew is tight. I photographed their friends Eini and Celso’s wedding last year and this large, rambunctious and completely fun group was all there – it’s so cool and inspiring to see such a large group of friends and family be so gosh-darned close.

Susan and Ike’s wedding day had a number of personalized touches. Their cakes were made by a friend, and the groom’s cake was a surprise, made to look like a DJ mixing board since Ike loves to DJ. It even lit up! All the flowers, including bouquets, boutonnieres and centrepieces, were made by an incredibly talented friend/bridesmaid. They had a traditional Chinese tea ceremony to honour their family background. And, perhaps coolest of all, all their wedding day events took place within a few city blocks of where they live! Rosewater, where they got married, is so close to their home, and and we chose to walk around the neighbourhood with their wedding party, shining some new light on the locations they go by on a daily basis – love how personal that was to them!

Anyhow, I’ll stop gushing about these two and let you see some of their photos now — and don’t forget to check out the bottom of the post for some words from our newlyweds themselves! Now some words from the newlyweds!

– What were your favourite wedding day moments (each of you, or one of you)?  The first time we saw each other on our wedding day and walking down the aisle. Him: walking through our neighbourhood and capturing us in the area we live in. – Were there any noteworthy challenges to planning your wedding?

Trying to maintain your patience and remaining calm:) If you can work through that, you can work through anything!
– Now that you’re wedding planning pros & newlyweds, do you have advice for engaged couples planning their wedding?
Know that all that planning and preparation will culminate in a single day that will go by all too quickly, so savour every moment of that day.

Boehmer Restaurant Wedding – Sam & Joe

April 10, 2015

Boehmer Restaurant Wedding
Sam and Joe had an intimate Boehmer Restaurant wedding (my *goodness* was the food delicious!), and everyone was just so happy to be there.
It’s completely evident that Sam and Joe are totally adored by their friends and family, and I can see why. They have such spirit and are so much fun to be around! Never a dull moment around these two. Full-on belly laughs galore at this one!
(The same could be said about their engagement session – Check it out here if you haven’t seen it yet!)

The speeches were full of hilarious stories, intermingled with touching ones about how much they are admired, and how much everyone supports their union.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you guys for inviting me to photograph this happy time for you. It’s been a joy and a half. <3
